November 2017

Only a week to go now before I leave for travelling in Sri Lanka and India for six weeks. Looking forward to immersing myself in painting and recording colour & design ready to inspire 2018 art work.

The cards I've had printed this summer of my landscape paintings and autumn leaf themes have been selling well both singly and in presentation packs in Norwich (at the Giggly Goat, Lower Goat Lane), in Corpusty (at the Old Workshop Gallery), in Horning (at the Galley) in Hoveton (at Katrina James Hair Studio) and in Wroxham (at Wroxham Barns). Planning now to extend the card range and the sales outlets next year.

Battled the online submission for Norfolk Open Studios 2018 and plan to be open for visitors for the three weekends last week in May and first two weekends in June including the Bank Holiday Monday on the May weekend. I will be running the usual charity fundraising 'Bring & Buy Cafe' in the studio kitchen and hope to top the £150 raised in the past two years.

Took part in the "Affordable Art Fair" held at the Chapel in Park Lane, Norwich. A new home has successfully be found for my painting "Birds of a Feather" Inks and Theads on khadi (Indian) hand made papers.

"Birds of a Feather" Inks and Threads

October 2017

Planning a six week painting trip to Sri Lanka and South India this coming December and January to develop ideas for a run of Indian inspired workshops next year.

Painting and gilding two 3ft "Dragons" and considering developing the idea of painting driftwood from the coast and river. Finding it a joy to be working in 3 dimensions rather than a flat canvas.

Landscaping at the studio but trying to end up with more time for art means several weeks of heavy duty landscaping .... it'll be worth it.

September 2017

Had some fun researching images relevant to the Ivory Coast in order to help decorate the top deck of a double decker bus filled with books and equipment locally that has been shipped out to Africa to travel around schools and orphanages.

My basket of card packs from original paintings are now available in Norwich at "The Giggly Goat" craft shop and gallery situated in the Norwich Lanes at Lower Goat Lane. Cards are £10 per pack of six assorted cards and are also available from my studio and by post (postage is £1.22 for one or two packs).

Decorating the top deck bound for Africa

August 2017

My baskets of card packs (see photos below) are now available at Wroxham Barns which is the the visitor attraction just outside Wroxham on the Tunstead Road. They are also available in The Old Workshop Gallery situated in the village of Corpusty south of Holt in North Norfolk. Single cards are available in The Galley which is the deli and gift shop in my village of Horning in the Norfolk Broads, and cards are available from my studio and by post (postage is £1.22 for one or two packs).

Delighted to take "The Ghost of Ranworth Broad" to his new home by the River Bure. The customer was especially pleased as she had written and published a children's book featuring Brother Pacificus (the ghost in the painting). The painting is on paper, utilising inks, sewn threads and medieval style illumination work in silver to give the ghostly effect in certain lighting.

The original design is based on the weather-vane atop Ranworth Church where Brother Pacificus went in his coracle from St Benet's Abbey to paint the rood screen there. Sophie Dickens designed the beautiful weather vane and granted me permission to make the painting.

Packaged 100 packs of artist cards based on two series of my paintings..."Norfolk Landscapes" and "Autumn Colours". Their first outing was to St Benet's Abbey ruins on the river boat trip for the Bishop of Norwich's service, with a pack donated to the raffle for funds.

July 2017

Completed a strange little commission to rework a family heirloom painting by painting out the ducks in the middle of a landscape and blending in the background. Yes, the ducks had to go.

An entire week taken up with designing and producing art cards with a Norwich printer. Working towards two sets of card packs, one based on my Norfolk landscape series of paintings and one based on an earlier botanical series based on autumn leaves. Several trips to Norwich for initial discussions, assessing quotes, proofing. Now looking forward to collection.

Holiday time. A delightful creative week away at a music summer school in Gloucestershire.

Marbling, painting and collage workshop held in my studio at Hoveton. Lovely way to be creative on a summer day.

June 2017

Preparing for July (adult) workshop using marbling techniques to prepare paper for collage on an underwater theme.

Holiday time and visiting family in Somerset and Cornwall.

Worked with the Browick Infant School in Wymondham in their ART WEEK creating beautiful Bugs and Butterflies for their wildlife garden. Plenty of preparation beforehand with the prototypes which enabled all the classes in year 2, 3 and 4 to all contribute in some way to the final ensemble in the entrance to the garden.

Walked the South Downs from Amberley towards Brighton, too hot to sit and sketch! Had to walk into the sea at Worthing.

OPEN STUDIOS underway. Visitors arriving for 15 out of the 16 days open - just one day to pause for breath! A special welcome to the Horning walking group and special thanks to all who contributed to the £50 raised in a collection for the Macmillian Nurse Care. Several paintings sold and a substantial mailing list created from visitors interested in the art classes to be held later in the year.

May 2017

OPEN STUDIOS begin in a fortnight so plenty of work to do. Large order of frame kits has been collected and now put to work. Paintings organised into themes and carefully displayed around the studio bungalow. Labelling and pricing, cleaning and signing all completed. Cards organised into themes, Unframed work into browsers. Curtains hung, floors swept, sinks cleaned. Just as well it's only once a year!

May is when the gardens suddenly take a running jump and threaten to out- run me. So several days spent at home with husband working on the gardens (the yellow roses looking gorgeous) and then several days with some gardening help working on the studio gardens, with ducklings, goslings and cygnets putting in an appearance. All looking ship-shape for OPEN STUDIO visitors.

Two successful Saturday workshops painting SKIES and trying out digital transfer techniques. The workshops include formal tuition on line and tone, colour mixing and use of different media. We have a short break in the media room for relevant 10 minute films and create trial work in a range of styles. All the catering is homemade; fresh soups, home baked bread and cakes.

Walked on the South Downs Way, reworking the route Petersfield to Amberley and planning a painting. Came across Philip Jackson's fascinating sculptures in his garden in the village of Cocking.

10-13/Unusually hot April weather as I walked the second part of the South Downs Way, Petersfield to Amberley. This time took plenty of photographs to work from plus some sketching and had a day at West Dean College researching Digital Print Transfer to use in mixed media work.

8th/ Sunny day again for the second Leaf Print and layering Saturday Art Workshop at my riverside studio.

1st/ Perfect day for the Saturday Art Class at my riverside studio. We enthusiastically worked on monoprints, monotypes, layering and stencilling with leaves. Such good weather we even went into the garden and had a go at spattering and dripping the backgrounds.

March 2017

27-30 Took my sketch book and paints with me on the first leg of the South Downs Way walk, Winchester to Petersfield. Plan to walk fewer miles each day on the second leg in a few weeks time and take more time out to sketch the landscape. Great start in Winchester when I came across Angie Lewin's exhibition in the library, Angie is a printmaker from Norfolk.

24/ Lino cutting day with friends locally. Working on the leaf theme and printing with a wooden spoon!

Devised teaching plans for the classes and about to roll up sleeves and start sprucing up the studio.

February 2017

Just back from a fortnight sketching in Maderia. So good to be out in the sunshine in summer clothes sketching again. Swam in the Atlantic (ok, jumped in the deep, yelled, thrashed and jumped out again!).

Drove to a talk at Kings Lynn museum where two of the anglo saxon brooches found at Pentney nearby were on loan from the British Museum. I'd painted one of the brooches from the hoard and was fascinated to hear about their context from the speaker Tim Pestell (NMS Curator of Archaeology). I stopped off at Pentney Church where the gravedigger had found them back in the 1970's. The museum kindly invited me to show my work to the audience and talk a little about how I came to paint it. (See photo below in December 2016)

Busy working on a set of "Illuminated Letters" together with a set of workshop plans and examples to teach later in the year. Interesting research into illuminated manuscripts, trying out different styles and making templates to assist students.

January 2017

Went to a talk in Norwich given by award winning photographer Eamonn MacCabe. Packed audience. Excellent illustrated and amusing talk, with examples of superbly captured photographs backed up by the stories behind them and the highs and lows of achieving them.

Poor Henry...a rather large (baby giant) tortoise....he belonged to a family in my village and sadly died this week. I made and painted him a made to measure casket together with a painting of his spectacular shell for his young owner.

Excellent day sharing my studio with artist Joan Sandford Cook from Cromer. Joan was working on large floral paintings whilst I was tackling a painting of Shiva the Indian god of life and destruction.

Pleased to meet a fellow artist (illustrator) living in my village. Chris Turnball has a very clever way with fish.

Went to an exhibition of computer generated art in Norwich at NUA. The movement and colours were pretty amazing.

The real Pentney Brooches are now in Kings Lynn Museum in Norfolk on loan from the British Museum. The Museum have kindly invited me over on February 8th to a talk on the Pentney finds where I will be able to show my painting of the brooch.

A spin off from the Pentney Brooch (Anglo- Saxon find in Norfolk) is a new set of small art works celebrating Norfolk villages. Two depicting my home village of Horning are now completed.

Art work on a roll. Working intently on a set of small paintings based on archeological finds from around the world. These all stem from the coffin painting on October 1st after my summer break - interesting how creativity can take off after a break and an unusual kick-start.

Visited NOEN at the Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool for an exhibition of artists using neon lighting. Appropriate show for the illuminations but I preferred the original designs on paper upstairs to the real neon exhibits.

Whilst in Blackpool feasted on the 'completely over the top' interiors in the Winter Garden complex, the Grand Theatre and the Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

Final attendance at committee of Norwich 20 Group Art Society. Good to do a stint on the committee and help organise shows this year but now have more time available for studio work and family.
